Bullfrog Baristas, the newest project of Bret Harte’s Independent Living Skills (ILS) program, received a $5000 educator grant from the California Teachers Association’s Institute for Teaching to establish a student-run coffee cart.
The California Teachers Association (CTA)’s Institute for Teaching was formed in 1967 to fill a need in the public education system to create better learning conditions through the promotion of teacher-driven change. The Institute’s grant program awards monies each year totaling 731 grants valued at $7.6M since its inception.
“Bullfrog Baristas, Building Independent Through Business, will give our students meaningful, hands-on job training beyond our regular job skills curriculum,” shared Cora Broglio, ILS instructor.
Through this project, ILS students will practice customer service, learn money management, and manage inventory, all while working as a team to develop real-world job skills to prepare them for employment in food service and beyond.
The Institute’s mission is to “enhance, support, and sustain high-quality teaching and high-quality public schools for all California students. Through mobilizing teachers, special programs, research, conferences, networking, and community-based coalitions, the CTA Institute for Teaching seeks to advance public education and promote the common good of our students and communities.”
Stay tuned for Bullfrog Baristas to hit the campus serving up local hot and cold coffee drinks! Questions can be directed to cbroglio@bhuhsd.k12.ca.us.
