Bret Harte ACADEC members participated in a Gatsby-themed study session last night in Murphys in preparation for their upcoming Mother Lode Regional Academic Decathlon competition final. Students competed against each other with their knowledge of the book, The Great Gatsby

This year’s theme, Roaring Twenties, was selected by California Academic Decathlon due to its “dynamic exploration of one of the most transformative decades in modern history.” Adding, “Students will dive into the Jazz Age through art, music, and literature, with The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald as the featured long work. The curriculum also includes the study of algebra and trigonometry, electricity and magnetism, economics with an emphasis on the U.S. economy of the 1920s, and the social and cultural changes that defined the era.” Read more about the California Academic Decathlon at https://academicdecathlon.org/.

The 46th annual Mother Lode Regional Academic Decathlon is scheduled to conclude next Saturday, February 6. Hosted by Tuolumne County Superintendent of Schools and held on Bet Harte’s campus, the competition begins at 8:00 AM. Beginning at approximately 3:00 PM, the public can attend the Super Quiz in the Bret Harte Theater free of charge. The Super Quiz is game-show style competitive event testing students’ knowledge in a 3-round relay format.

Qualifiers from the regional competition will continue onto the California Academic Decathlon scheduled to begin on Thursday, March 19 in Santa Clara. Previously, four Bullfrogs medaled in gold at the California Academic Decathlon competition: Jackson Oliver ’21 in math; Shannon O'Flinn '23 in essay; Owen Gayle ‘24 in speech; and current senior Brayden Bowersox in speech last year.
