For the last thirty years, Ms. Truman has coordinated an annual veterans round table where local military veterans visit campus to meet, talk, and share their stories with United States History students the first week of May.
Today all Bret Harte juniors, and some seniors enrolled in Ms. Truman's Columbia College Access Pathway course housed on the Bret Harte campus, participated in this annual tradition. A total of 13 military veterans met and interacted with well-over 100 students today in Bob Bach Gymnasium.
Ms. Truman was presented with a National Citizenship Education Teacher award by the James D. Piper VFW Post #12118 of Copperopolis during today's event. Truman will retire from the District this summer after 30 years of teaching social studies. Junior Emily Hancock was this year's winner of the Voices of Democracy essay, and was awarded $300.
