Sister superintendent Louise Simson of Mark Twain Union Elementary School District recently published a video pleading the case of rural school districts directed to state lawmakers.
In the video titled, "Why the state should bend spending rules for small rural school districts," Simson makes the case of flexible spending of post-pandemic initiatives, specifically the Expanded Learning Opportunities Program that provides funds for after-school and summer school enrichment for kindergarten through sixth grade students. She would like to use a portion of her District's state funding to pay for math and reading student tutors from Bret Harte, but the state will not allow it. "The BHUHSD is excited about the opportunity for our students to tutor the Mark Twain students," shared superintendent Scott Nanik. "This partnership provides essential support to the elementary students and will ultimately enhance the academic quality of the students entering our district."
